I was invited to Cape Talk recently to talk about this interesting “category” of drinker. We tend to see the “alcoholic” as a homeless man on a park bench – someone who has reached “rock bottom” and of course that is not us.
But between the person who has no problems with alcohol and the “alcoholic” there are millions of people who are drinking on a daily basis and whose consumption is creeping up over the years. Many of these can be classified as “almost alcoholic”.
Often these people will go to their doctor or therapist with anxiety and/or depression – not realising that there may be a link between their mental state and the alcohol they are consuming.
